Choosing a Vase That Fits
One of the keys to successfully selecting a vase for a flower arrangement is to consider the eventual placement of the finished product. A common mistake is to ignore this consideration, and to wind up with an arrangement that either looks out of place or is functionally the wrong size for the space. This likely happens because the person putting the arrangement together gets so focused on the relationship of the vase to the flowers that they don't think about where it is going.
It is not always possible to see the place where an arrangement is going to be, however if possible, try to see it. If you see a lot of other visual elements around the place -- things like curios, trinkets, or pictures – then keep the vase and the flowers simple. Use something like a nice glass cylinder vase or a square vase.
On the other hand, if the placement is a fairly stark environment, then go a little wild. Choose an ornate vase and large explosive blooms. Don't be afraid to introduce a lot of curves and detail into the arrangement. Really make an effort to add spark and excitement. Your work will add life to the space.
Along with the shape and decorative intensity of the vase, you also must consider the size. Often this is a simply practical matter. You either have a lot of space or you don't. Hospital rooms are notoriously tight on space as are office cubicles. So if the arrangement is destined for one of those places, or a similar locale, keep it narrow, low, and simple. Sometimes bowl vases are good for this as they have a low center of gravity, so they will endure minor bumps and shuffles.
The size of the vase has a lot to do with its functionality, or more aptly, the functionality of the piece within the destination space. The simplest example is that of the wedding centerpiece. You have to make sure that the vase keeps the blooms either below or above the eye level of the wedding guests. Otherwise, they will not be able to carry on a good cross table conversation.
Another example is a functional mirror. You don't want to put a big vase of flowers in front of a mirror that is actually being used for makeup or other purposes. Keep everything low. Sometimes in these cases you want a wide container to offset the low profile.
Always invest in nice vases. You will have them for a while, and if you keep a nice variety of sizes and shapes around, you will be able to choose the appropriate one each time.
