VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE (AND LOVE)
Your wedding flowers say a lot about your character. Exuberant or reserved, flowers say it all. And as they’re one of the focal points of the special event, flowers are being used in many new and creative ways which reveal and reflect the couple’s individuality.
Here are a few of the colourful trends that have been seen at stylish weddings across the country.
No-one seems to be afraid of colour – and lots of it. Pale pastels and traditional whites are making way for explosions of colour, from the reds and orange of striking gerbera daisies to roses in bright confectionery shades. We’re seeing more and more interesting colour combinations such as pink and yellow, orange and purple, purple and red, lime green and bright yellow and red and orange.
Arrangements comprising one type of flower (monobotanic) or one colour (monochromatic) can also look fabulous. Cerise pink and raspberry coloured blooms look amazing when teamed with lime green for a fresh, summer ambience (roses and spent hydrangea heads. For a winter wedding that’s hot – trendy brides have been choosing bright reds instead of chocolate and earthy colours, with some going for blues and purples to give their nuptials a lift.
Another trend, according to a leading Perth florist, Airport Florist, is that interesting and different designs and shapes of flower arrangements are being seen at weddings. While traditional arrangements will never lose their popularity, many modern brides are opting for very dramatic, asymmetrical arrangements which feature unusual angles and shapes. There’s also a trend towards very loose, informal and unstructured arrangements.
Another talking point is the variety of containers that brides and professional wedding florists are using. The perennially popular glass fishbowl is making way for gilded urns, silver tumblers, mosaic bowls, rectangular vases and baskets. For a dramatic effect that relies on simplicity and quality of the flower, florists are also using rows of identical containers, often with a single, perfect bloom. Placing vases of various heights and sizes can also add interest. A word of caution though – it’s important to make sure that arrangements don’t prevent conversation. Even if they’re stunning, if the flowers get in the way because they’re too tall or too big, wedding guests will talk about them in a negative way!
Accessorising and lighting the flower arrangements is also becoming increasingly popular. For elegance and romance, nothing beats the flickering glow of candlelight. Floating candles look stunning, as do small candles hung from a central branch in an arrangement. Branches can also be spraypainted silver or gold for a sophisticated look. Small votives can be also wired into arrangements to create a magical atmosphere. Other trends are to use tall pillar candles clustered together. Other ideas for accessories include ‘bling’ (faux gems, crystals and beads), lace, ribbon, mirrors, feathers, berries, butterflies and even fruit and vegetables.
Brides are expressing their individuality with wonderful creativity in their wedding flowers, from the colours, varieties, shapes, heights and containers. As the Perth florist says, variety is the spice of life – and there’s a wonderful variety of wedding flowers that are also clearly livening up the nuptials!
